DUSHANBE (TCA) — Tajikistan’s Ministry of Labor, Migration and Employment in partnership with UNICEF Tajikistan and other partners has opened a training hub in Dushanbe designed to upskill and create job opportunities for vulnerable Tajik youth, UNICEF Tajikistan (the United Nations Children's Fund) said in a press release.
The model – known as Impact Sourcing – equips young people with market-competitive IT skills and connects them to socially responsible international organisations that hire them in positions for which they can work remotely via the Internet.
The Impact Sourcing model takes advantage of the new 21st century job market. Research conducted by UNICEF in 2018 showed that both domestic and international companies are in great need of young employees who can do specific jobs in the information and communication sphere – an opportunity that is especially advantageous for Tajikistan, where the vast majority of people live in remote areas and meaningful job opportunities are few and far between.
By allowing people to earn competitive salaries regardless of how remotely they live, the model also goes some way to addressing issues of unemployment, outbound migration, and low salaries nationwide. 40% of people who travel abroad to work are under 30. Remittances from Russia account for 42% of Tajikistan’s GDP. By keeping young people in Tajikistan, it not only keeps families together – it curbs the national “brain drain” crisis.
The program is aimed primarily at isolated youth such as girls, migrants, and those living with disabilities and it is expected that 8120 young girls and boys will be empowered with skills and work in its first three years of operation.
The model has already been trialed in Khorogh where more than 80 young people have completed their training and are now being supported by UNICEF in finding international job opportunities.
The first cohort should complete their training in Dushanbe in the Impact Hub by 2021.
