Talks underway to return Kyrgyzstanis detained in Tajikistan for border crossing

Bishkek, Feb. 22, 2021. / Kabar /. Tajikistan’s law enforcement bodies have detained five citizens of Kyrgyzstan, Kabar Agency has learnt from the press service of the Batken Oblast state administration.

On Feb. 16, five residents of Batken Oblast’s regions went to Tajikistan through the village of Zhany-Zher, Leilek region. They headed for a cattle market and were detained by Tajik security forces in Sughd Oblast, Tajikistan.

The Batken Oblast state administration said the Kyrgyz citizens were detained by Tajik law enforcement authorities because they lost their way, that’s why they crossed the border in the wrong place.

Today, Feb. 22 relatives of the detained citizens appealed to the state administration.

Governor of Kyrgyzstan’s Batken Oblast Omurbek Suvanaliyev said negotiations between the law enforcement agencies of the two countries are underway.

"Today we are discussing the possibility of organizing a meeting for state administration’s representatives and parents of those detained so that they can visit Kyrgyzstanis,” he said.

The governor added the issues related to the border areas will be solved on the basis of the law and negotiations.

In case of confirmation of Kyrgyzstanis’ guilt, they will hold accountable according to the Tajik legislation. Meanwhile, Tajikistanis detained on the territory of Kyrgyzstan will take responsibility under the laws of Kyrgyzstan.
