Triathletes organize environmental campaign in Bishkek ahead of World Cleanup Day

Bishkek, Sept. 14, 2020. /Kabar/. In Bishkek, triathletes held an environmental campaign on the eve of World Cleanup Day. During the morning run, they collected about 100 kg of plastic waste.

An unusual eco run was held on Sept. 13, 2020. Professional sportsmen and running fans took part in it. Armed with bags and gloves, they overcame distances from 5 to 15 km. Along the way, the runners were collecting garbage, mainly plastic and glass. At the finish line, they were met with scales - there was a reception of the collected garbage. All the finishers were awarded honorary diplomas by the Triathlon Federation of the Kyrgyz Republic and the “Eco Demi” Public Foundation.

Chairwoman of the “Eco Demi” PF Venera Mambetmusayeva: "100 kilograms of waste will be recycled at a specialized enterprise. The essence of all our actions is one thing - to draw attention of Kyrgyz people to their way of life, the impact that they have on the environment. The World Cleanup Day was invented for this purpose - it's not just a one-time cleanup day, it's an international propaganda of the philosophy of cleanliness, the culture of reasonable human behavior".

World Cleanup Day (aka WCD) is an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris. It is coordinated by the Estonian organization Let's Do It! World. In 2020, the World Cleanup Day will be celebrated on Sept. 13.

Kyrgyzstan will join the celebration for the third time. In the previous two years, the republic was ahead of the rest of the world by the number of volunteers involving the global cleanup, becoming the undisputed leader of the action. In Kyrgyzstan, the country partner of Let's Do It! is a “Eco Demi” Public Foundation.

“The Federation always tries to support environmental initiatives, because sport, healthy lifestyle and environment are inseparable concepts. This year it was planned to hold a big eco-marathon together with other sports federations and specialized public funds, but, unfortunately, the pandemic prevented us from holding it, we limited ourselves to short distances and a small number of sportsmen,” said Elena Lyzhina-Polchenkova, the Secretary General of the Triathlon Federation in Kyrgyzstan.
