Bishkek, March 27 / Kabar /. Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament Chynybai Tursunbekov, during his working visit to St. Petersburg met today with OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Christine Muttonen, the press service of the Jogorku Kenesh reported.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the issues of further development of relations between the Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The sides also exchanged views on joint counteraction to terrorist threats.
Chynybai Tursunbekov expressed gratitude to the OSCE PA for supporting Kyrgyzstan's efforts towards strengthening parliamentary democracy. "We are interested in working closely with international organizations such as the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly," he said.
In addition, Speaker Tursunbekov said that Kyrgyzstan is alarmed at the growing scale of the spread of radicalism and extremism in the world. "We are taking all measures to prevent the spread of terrorism, constantly updating lists of prohibited terrorist organizations, tightening punishments for participation in terrorist activities," he added. In terms of the OSCE PA autumn session in Kyrgyzstan in 2018, the Speaker informed that the country's leadership attaches great importance to holding such a large-scale event with the participation of representatives from 57 countries.
In turn, Kristin Mutonen said that the OSCE PA appreciates the achievements of Kyrgyzstan on the way to building a parliamentary democracy and an open, clean electoral system. "I am pleased that Kyrgyzstan is using new technologies in the election process. We would like to send our observers to the upcoming presidential elections," she concluded.
In addition, Kristin Muttonen stressed the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation and noted the need to build up joint efforts in confronting such global threats as terrorism and extremism.
