UN adopts Sadyr Zhaparov’s initiative to declare 2022 Int’l Year of Sustainable Mountain Development

Bishkek, Dec. 17, 2021 . / Kabar / . At the initiative of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, the United Nations declared 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, the press service of Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.

A relevant resolution was adopted on Dec. 16 at the plenary session of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

"Speaking from the high rostrum, Kyrgyzstan’s diplomatic mission in New York said that the initiative to declare 2022 the year of mountains was voiced by President Sadyr Zhaparov at the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. It was put forward in honor of the 20th anniversary since the first global Bishkek Mountain Summit in 2002," the report said.

The resolution invites member states, UN organizations, other international organizations and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector and the scientific and educational community, to celebrate the International Year in an appropriate manner in order to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable mountain development, as well as the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems.

"It is the third resolution on the sustainable development of mountain regions adopted at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan. The first resolution titled "Nature Knows no Borders..." was adopted on April 16 during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, the second - "Strengthening Mountain Glacier Monitoring and Research, was adopted on Nov/ 23 during the 41st session of the UNESCO General Conference," the Foreign Ministry explained.

The resolution on the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development was adopted unanimously by all UN member states. Moreover, 93 states co-sponsored this document.

Thus, in the framework of the implementation of this resolution, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will promote the initiative of Kyrgyzstan on the adoption of the UN "Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions" for the period 2023-2027.
