UN Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan expresses readiness to help in restoration of Batken

Bishkek, May 4, 2021. / Kabar /. UN Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan Ozonnia Ozhielo announced at a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Ruslan Kazakbaev his readiness to help the republic in the restoration of Batken Oblast in accordance with the requests of the Kyrgyz side.

The press service of the Foreign Ministry reported that on May 3, 2021, Foreign Minister Kazakbaev met with UN Resident Coordinator in the Kyrgyz Republic Ozonnia Ozhielo.

During the meeting, Ruslan Kazakbaev informed about the current situation in the conflict zone on the section of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border in Batken Oblast.

Kazakbaev said that as a result of the conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, which took place from April 28 to May 1, 2021, the Kyrgyz side had 36 killed, of which only 3 are military personnel, the rest are civilians, about 160 wounded, more than 30 thousand internally displaced persons, as well as destroyed houses and infrastructure. In this regard, it is currently required to provide humanitarian assistance to the citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic affected by the conflict and support the restoration of their homes and destroyed infrastructure facilities.

The minister also said that on May 30, 2021, he had a telephone conversation with the head of the Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Natalia Gherman and a meeting of the Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN in New York Mirgul Moldoisaeva, with the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations for Europe, Central Asia, North and South America Miroslav Jenca. Kazakbaev noted that both of them expressed the readiness of the UN agencies to support the post-conflict reconstruction of Batken Oblast.

UN Resident Coordinator Ozhielo expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. He welcomed the appeal of President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov to the people of Kyrgyzstan, which speaks of the importance of resolving any issues exclusively through peaceful negotiations and the country's commitment to compliance with the reached agreements. Ozonnia Ozhielo welcomed the efforts of the Kyrgyz side to ceasefire and sign the Protocol on the settlement of the conflict. Ozhielo confirmed the readiness of UN agencies to provide assistance in the restoration of Batken Oblast in accordance with the requests of the Kyrgyz side. At the same time, the post-coordinator noted that at the present time various requests are received from various departments related to post-conflict reconstruction in Batken. He noted that, in light of this, work is required to coordinate these appeals.

In conclusion, the sides agreed to continue a regular dialogue in order to coordinate efforts to resolve the problems of those affected by the conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.
