It is impossible to develop regions by supporting only one or several sectors of the economy, Senior Policy Officer of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO UN) on politics Vito Cistulli told in Osh, where issues of regional development of Osh oblast were discussed.

He said that the successful development of the regions requires a comprehensive approach, for this it is necessary to involve the whole territory of the region simultaneously.

Mira Subankulova, UNDP Program Manager for Osh oblast, said that regional development is a priority for both the country and the UN development programs.

"We believe that joint efforts of the government and international organizations, as well as a well-developed plan of action, will help improve the living conditions of people in remote areas of the republic," Subankulova said.

As reported, the main agenda of the meeting was the analysis and assessment of the current situation of regional development in Osh oblast, as well as the development of alternative approaches for achieving sustainable development of the region in medium and long term perspectives.

The participants consider that the development of the regions will help improve not only the economic opportunities of the republic, but also the living conditions of people throughout the country. In addition, various concepts for improving work in this direction were presented. One of such concepts was presented by the administration of Osh oblast and was aimed at forming the basic design of development programs for specific populated areas.

As a result of the discussions, three groups were identified to work towards the development of the regions. Each group presented its vision for regional development by making specific proposals and a plan of action.

The event was organized as part of a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Program, as well as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Representatives of the administration of Osh oblast, representatives of the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Agriculture, Food Industry and Melioration, Kyrgyz State Agency for Local Self-Government and Inter-ethnic Relations, Osh Mayor’s Office, representatives of district akimiats, entrepreneurs, international and public organizations took part in the discussion.
