UNCTAD Secretary General to send special mission to Bishkek to discuss cooperation

Bishkek, March 2, 2023 /Kabar/. On March 1, 2023, as part of his visit to Geneva to participate in the High-Level Segment of the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Jeenbek Kulubaev met with Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebecca Greenspan.

The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic said that during the meeting, the sidesdiscussed a number of topical issues, including those related to the development of a creative economy, the exchange of external debt for "green" initiatives, as well as sustainable mountain development.

In particular, Kulubaev announced the adoption of the Concept for the Development of the Creative Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2022 and informed about the development of this industry in the country. The minister recalled the adoption in December 2022 of the resolution of the UN General Assembly on the announcement of 2023-2027 "Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions".

He informed about the appeal of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov on the exchange of external debt for "green" initiatives. Taking into account the mandate of UNCTAD, the minister expressed a request to Greenspan, within the framework of the mandate of the Organization, to provide support in the practical implementation of this idea.

To determine specific measures to deepen further cooperation with UNCTAD, Kulubaev invited Greenspan to make a working visit to the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Secretary General of UNCTAD noted the relevance of the voiced initiatives. She expressed UNCTAD's readiness to support the Kyrgyz Republic in their implementation within the framework of the Organization's mandate, while recommending the development of an integrated approach in this direction. In this regard, she expressed her intention to send a special mission to Bishkek to discuss cooperation with the government of the Kyrgyz Republic on these issues.
