UNDP ready to support Kyrgyzstan in reconstruction of social facilities in conflict-hit Batken

Bishkek, Sept. 21, 2022 . / Kabar / . President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov met with Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner as part of his participation in the 77th session of the UN General Assemblyin New York (USA).

Views were exchanged on cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN, including in the field of the environment and development of mountain regions.

The sides also discussed issues concerning the support of reforms in Kyrgyzstan and practical implementation of its international initiatives.

Sadyr Zhaparov stressed the need to increase the project activities of the United Nations Development Program in connection with global climate change, the pandemic coronavirus infection and other factors, as a result of which many goals of preserving ecosystems, eliminating poverty and hunger and supporting economic growth are at risk of incomplete implementation.

The president noted that Kyrgyzstan is taking measures to address the problem of intensive melting of glaciers and is implementing programs to protect mountain ecosystems.

In addition, the Kyrgyz leader stressed the importance of adopting the resolution initiated by Kyrgyzstan on declaring 2023-2027 as the "Five Year Action for the Development of Mountain Regions", as well as international support to achieve the country's goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Sadyr Zhaparov, drawing attention to the tragic events as a result of the invasion of the Tajik side, which killed 59 people and caused destruction of social and civil infrastructure, expressed gratitude to the UNDP for its support and emergency assistance in these difficult days for the country.

Taking the opportunity, Achim Steiner expressed condolences to Sadyr Zhaparov in connection with the human casualties as a result of the situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border and wished a speedy resolution of the situation.

He expressed readiness to support the restoration of social facilities in the affected areas.

In addition, the UNDP Administrator offered to deepen cooperation with Kyrgyzstan on the "green economy" and assured of his intention to continue fruitful cooperation with the Kyrgyz side.

The parties agreed to deepen cooperation and further prospects of cooperation.
