UNODC assists in development of probation institute in Kyrgyzstan

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) assists in the development of a probation institute in Kyrgyzstan, representatives of the organization told during the Central Asian Dialogue on Effective Prison Management of Violent Extremist and Terrorist Offenders.

As reported, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime supports the government in order to prevent radicalization of violence in prisons and create conditions for the development of a probation institute in the Kyrgyz Republic and reduce radicalization of violence, improve the penitentiary system and the probation service in work with those convicted of crimes of extremist and terrorist nature.

UN Resident Coordinator Ozonnia Ojielo noted that the UNODC, as the custodian of Nelson Mandela rules, is responsible for providing technical and expert support to member states in the area of ​​prison reform. He added that in order to achieve this goal, the UNODC assists the countries of Central Asia to reduce the prison population, assist in staff development and organize rehabilitation work on preparing convicts for release.
