As part of the visit of the Uzbek government delegation to Japan, mutual intentions to conclude new contracts for the supply of natural uranium from Uzbekistan to Japan were discussed, the press service of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan said.
During the visit, participation of Itochu in projects on mining uranium, zinc, lead, in addition - deep processing of dumps of mining and metallurgical enterprises of Uzbekistan in order to extract uranium and rare-earth metals were discussed.
Uzbekistan is one of the world leaders in uranium reserves, ranked 12th in the world in uranium reserves and 7th in uranium mining. At the moment, the country has explored about 40 deposits with uranium reserves, the basis of which are 27 deposits.
According to the data of information center of Uzbekistan’s State Committee for Geology and Mineral Resources, explored and estimated reserves of uranium amount to 180 thousand tons.
In 2017, Uzbekistan has signed a seven-year contract for the supply of uranium to the United States for $300 million. In addition, the country supplies its uranium to Japan and South Korea.
Uzbek experts believe that contracts for uranium supply may be signed during President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's visit to Japan in December this year.
