Tashkent, Aug. 25, 2020. /Kabar/. Uzbekistan as a current member of the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO ERB) has joined the international mechanism for the development and distribution of COVID-19 coronavirus vaccine, the press service of the republic’s Health Ministry reported Tuesday.
At a recent briefing in Geneva, Director-General of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 172 economies are now engaged in discussions to potentially participate in COVAX, a global initiative aimed at working with vaccine manufacturers to provide countries worldwide equitable access to safe and effective vaccines, once they are licensed and approved.
COVAX currently has the world’s largest and most diverse COVID-19 vaccine portfolio - including nine candidate vaccines, with a further nine under evaluation and conversations underway with other mayor producers.
“WHO will cooperate with all vaccine producers, and the mechanism is aimed at equal distribution of licensed and approved funds among all program participants,’ the press service of the Uzbek Health Ministry said.
Currently, WHO ERB representatives Oleg Storozhenko and Tanja Schmidt are in Uzbekistan, they are directly involved in the treatment of patients with coronavirus.
Earlier it was reported that Uzbekistan is studying the possibility of using Chinese and Russian vaccines. Scientists from the USA and Great Britain are also developing the vaccine. Earlier, WHO expert Mike Ryan said that coronavirus vaccination might not begin before early 2021.
