Bishkek, Dec. 15, 2021 . / Kabar / . Uzbekistan has 4 million tons of radioactive waste. This was announced at an AIMC press conference with the participation of officials of the State Committee for Industrial Safety, KunUz reported.
It is noted that these radioactive wastes were accumulated during the Soviet era as a result of uranium mining activities. This problem exists in other Central Asian countries, for example, in Kazakhstan – 240 million tons.
It was decided to allocate the first grant of €2 million with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Union and a number of countries to carry out environmental rehabilitation of the areas where these wastes are located.
Reportedly, inspections by the Department of Radiation and Nuclear Safety revealed 1,920 deficiencies. During the investigation, 41 employees were prosecuted for violating radiation and nuclear safety.
In order to develop nuclear medicine and the fight against cancer in 2019-2021, 3 radiotherapy devices were delivered.
