Tashkent, Dec.31, 2019. /Kabar/. In accordance with the decision of the Summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on Oct. 11, 2019, chairmanship in CIS from Jan.1, 2020 to Dec.31, 2020 moves to Uzbekistan, the press service of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
Uzbekistan's priorities during its chairmanship in the Commonwealth are expanding multilateral cooperation, primarily in the areas of developing trade and economic ties, promoting joint projects in various sectors, revealing the transport, logistics and transit potential, enhancing security, intensifying cultural and humanitarian exchanges.
About 70 events of various levels and formats are expected to be held in Tashkent within the framework of chairmanship, including meetings of the Council of Heads of State, Council of Heads of Government, Council of Foreign Ministers, Economic Council, Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, Economic Forum, Forum of Regions, Forum of Scientific and Creative Intellectuals.
During Uzbekistan's chairmanship, it is planned to prepare and adopt more than 10 conceptual documents, aimed at further developing multilateral interaction.
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is a regional intergovernmental organization of nine (originally ten) post-Soviet republics in Eurasia. It was formed following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
It covers an area of 20,368,759 km² (8,097,484 sq mi) and has an estimated population of 239,796,010. The CIS encourages cooperation in economic, political and military affairs and has certain powers relating to the coordination of trade, finance, lawmaking, and security. It has also promoted cooperation on cross-border crime prevention.
The CIS states are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
