Uzbekistan's foreign debt exceeds USD 29 bln

Tashkent, Dec. 18, 2020. /Kabar/. As of Oct. 1, 2020 the total volume of foreign debt of Uzbekistan made up USD 29.3 billion, having increased by 19.7% or USD 4.8 billion compared to the beginning of 2020, the publication of the Central Bank entitled "Balance of payments, international investment position and foreign debt of the Republic of Uzbekistan” says.

The increase of public sector debt for 9 months of 2020 amounted to USD 2.9 billion. Due to the global pandemic and slowdown in economic activity, the market value of Uzbekistan's sovereign bonds slightly decreased compared to early 2020 as a result of decrease in quotations on international financial markets. Debt of the private sector increased by USD 1.9 billion, mainly due to increased borrowing by banks.

In 9 months of 2020, the private sector borrowed a total of USD 3 billion. The borrowings were mainly attracted by banks – USD 2.6 billion, the textile industry enterprises – USD 95 million and enterprises of other sectors of the economy – USD 260 million.

Meanwhile, during the period under review, the principal and interest on the public foreign debt were repaid in the amount of USD 454.8 million and USD 263.4 million, respectively.

Payments on private foreign debt amounted to USD 1.3 billion on principal and USD 242.1 million on interest. At the same time, enterprises of the oil and gas and energy sectors, as well as the banking sector continue to make the largest volume of payments both on the principal debt and interest.
