Bishkek, Feb.11, 2020. /Kabar/. Since the end of December last year, vaccination with a rotavirus vaccine has been started throughout Kyrgyzstan, according to the National Calendar of Prophylactic Vaccinations of the Kyrgyz Republic, the press service of the Ministry of Health of country reported.
Since Dec.23, 2019, the Health Ministry on the basis of the recommendation of an independent technical group of experts on immunization with evidence data approved the order on the calendar of preventive vaccinations for children and adults, which includes rotavirus vaccine.
Throughout the world, rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea in young children and poses a significant problem for public health in Kyrgyzstan.
The infectious disease surveillance system in Kyrgyzstan registers from 7,300 or more cases of diarrhoea among children under 5 years of age annually.
According to research data, 131 fatal cases, 2,917 hospitalizations and 17,299 requests for medical care will be prevented each year in the country due to introduction of rotavirus vaccines.
Rotavirus gastroenteritis is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children.
By the age of five, nearly every child in the world has been infected with rotavirus at least once. There are five species of this virus, referred to as A, B, C, D, and E. Rotavirus A, the most common, causes more than 90% of infections in humans.
The virus is transmitted by the faecal-oral route.
In Kyrgyzstan, all children have the right to be vaccinated free of charge according to the calendar of preventive vaccinations at their place of actual residence without a residence permit and without being assigned to a medical institution.
