WHO Director General welcomes Kyrgyzstan’s efforts in reforms in health sector

Bishkek, Oct.7, 2019. /Kabar/. On Oct.7, 2019 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Chingiz Aidarbekov met with the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus.

The meeting took place during the Kyrgyz minister’s visit to Geneva to participate in the high-level meeting on the fight against statelessness in the framework of the 70th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Programme.

According to the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry, the sides discussed topical issues of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the WHO, including those related to the reform and improvement of the health sector in the country, as well as the organization's project activities.

FM Aidarbekov noted that the project activities of WHO contribute to the active and consistent work of the Government of Kyrgyzstan in strengthening the health sector, and expressed gratitude for the assistance, provided by the organization.

The minister noted the importance of the WHO's continued assistance to Kyrgyzstan in the comprehensive solution of such health problems as combating the spread of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, as well as strengthening and development of primary health care in the country through the implementation of various programs and projects.

In turn, the WHO Director General welcomed the efforts of Kyrgyzstan in the reforms in the field of health care and welcomed the current level of bilateral cooperation between the sides.

Tedros Ghebreyesus thanked Minister Aidarbekov for the productive meeting and confirmed his readiness to continue cooperation in order to address the issues facing the country.
