The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) and Turkmenistan have discussed measures to fight against coronavirus.
The discussions took place on July 10, 2020, during a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and experts from WHO/Europe, who are in Turkmenistan for a working visit, Trend reported referring to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the Turkmen side underlined that the country supports the recommendations of WHO.
The sides noted that the country is currently implementing a program to ensure preparedness for counteracting and responding to infectious diseases. Turkmenistan has approved a plan of socio-economic measures to counter the spread of the coronavirus pandemic as well.
The minister underlined that Turkmenistan, together with UN system agencies, is currently embarking on the development of a third national plan covering the humanitarian component of the country’s efforts to fight against the COVID-19.
During the conversation the sides noted that the proposal of Turkmenistan to create an international council of medical scientists and the country's accession to the “Platform for access to technologies against COVID-19” (C-TAP) is very significant.
In addition, Head of the WHO country office, Paulina Karvovska, expressed gratitude to the Government of Turkmenistan from the leadership of WHO for the coordinated organization of the visit of the WHO mission to Turkmenistan and comprehensive support.
The WHO mission arrived in Turkmenistan on July 6, 2020.
Nowadays, there are no registered cases of coronavirus infection in Turkmenistan.
The outbreak of COVİD-19 disease began in the Chinese city of Wuhan, which is an international transportation hub, at the end of December 2019.
On March 11, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a pandemic.
