"The World Bank supports two main development sectors, declared by President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov- regional development and digitalization,” Director of Strategy and Operations in the Europe and Central Asia Region of the World Bank Mariam Sherman said today, Nov.19 at the High Level Development Forum “Accelerating Reforms For Sustainable Development”.
The Forum took place in Bishkek with the participation of international donor organizations, international financial institutions and development partners.
She noted supporting integrated regional development through transformational investments to accelerate economic growth is a key element of the World Bank Partnership Framework 2018-2022.
“We have chosen Osh city and Osh Oblast and are focusing on agribusiness and tourism as pilot sectors that have high potential for growth and job creation. In the case of success, this program will be replicated in other regions,” Mariam Sherman said.
She also noted the World Bank welcomes the country's attention to digitalization.
Mariam Sherman said the Digital CASA project, funded by the World Bank, supports an ambitious program of state transformations in the field of digital technologies, called Digital Kyrgyzstan.
“The project aims to increase access to the Internet, attract private investment in ICTs and enhance the government's ability to provide digital services. This is part of a larger regional program, and Kyrgyzstan is the first country to join it. It is followed by Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan," the WB representative said.
In addition, she focused on climate change and disaster risk management.
“Better management of natural resources can reduce exposure to climate change and natural disasters that threaten development outcomes and affect poor people the most. Together with other development partners, especially the Japanese Government, the World Bank is helping the Kyrgyz Republic to build resilience to climate and disaster risks by upgrading national meteorological and hydrological services, improving early warning systems for the population, improving the national emergency call and control system, and strengthening the capacity of search and rescue teams," she stressed.
The director of Strategy and Operations in the Europe and Central Asia Region of the WB stressed the World Bank remains a reliable development partner of the Kyrgyz Republic.
