Bishkek, April 20, 2021. / Kabar /. The second day of the World Journalists Conference 2021 focused on the global climate issues and the role of journalism.
Journalists from 50 countries discussed the accelerating crisis of climate change and environmental damage, the international community's joint responses to global climate issues and the role of journalism.
The participants of the conference made presentations on policies of each country on climate change and made suggestions on improving coverage of the topic by journalists.
Habib Toumi, the media advisor from Bahrain News Agency said that dealing with climate change is not a luxury or a light topic that can be procrastinated at leisure. “It is in fact so urgent that immediate action is needed to help control its damages, mitigate its spread and confront it in every possible way. In fact, climate change should be treated like the COVID-19 pandemic that has abruptly brought the world to a standstill, destroyed lives, damaged economies and shattered hopes for a brighter future,” he noted.
Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Kabul Times Fathulbari Akhgar stressed that journalism is facing a new challenge on how to warn the mass to avoid the rising harms of the climate changes, in their communities. He proposed professionals, researchers and trainers in journalism from all over the world to jointly and coordinately work and exchange on best practices, innovations and challenges, they believe facing on how to mitigate the harmful impacts of the climate change.
Ahmed Jamil from Bangladesh suggested such activities as conducting training and capacity building on Global Climate Issues and Journalism; arranging fellowship for journalists on Global Climate Issues; organizing TV talk shows and policy dialogue among relevant stakeholders; organizing radio magazine program; designing investigative journalism program focusing on climate issues.
Meanwhile, Hassan Humeida from GEOMAR/University of Kiel University of Flensburg suggested that there could be a specific time slot where each country would cover the news exclusively on climate change so that the global population always receives up to date information.
Director of Kabar News Agency of Kyrgyzstan Kubanychbek Taabaldiev spoke about the situation in Central Asia due to the climate change.
He stressed that rapid climate change around the world leads to the fact that the measures taken are lagging behind and the danger is growing and the changes caused by the consequences of the ecological catastrophe are very noticeable in the climate in the region.
“The world community and international organizations should be notified of possible natural phenomena caused by climate change for a region with a total population of more than 80 million people and huge historical baggage,” he said.
Nasir Aijaz, a chief editor from Pakistan suggested forming the global alliance of journalists to jointly combat the climate change threats. “The propose Alliance should work for getting the journalists trained in coverage of climate issues. This could be done through the international agencies working on global climate change issues. The proposed Alliance may also monitor the media situation/coverage of climate issues in different countries and suggest the ways and means for improving it,” he noted.
Ghena Halik Laha from Lebanon expressed the hope that maybe in the near future, the situation will change across the globe and all countries and media will pay greater attention to climate change and think of ways of making the world greener and safer for everyone to live in it.
The first day of the event was devoted to the topic “The Prospect of Post-COVID Era and the Role of Journalism” where journalists from around the world discussed the pandemic, its influence, COVID-19 measures, challenges in the world due to the pandemic.
The World Journalists Conference 2021 was held via videoconference. During two days about 60 journalists of the world discussed the role of journalism and the prospects of post COVID-19 era and the global climate change issues
