Bishkek, Nov.13, 2024. /Kabar/. President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov addressed the Round Table “Mountains in Danger: Addressing Loss and Damage in the Himalayas” organized by Nepal on the margins of the World Leaders Summit on Climate Action (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Speaking at the event, the Kyrgyz president emphasized that climate change negatively affects mountain ecosystems and people, including food security, agriculture and livelihoods, as well as the provision of key ecosystem services, such as water and clean energy, in many mountain regions of the world, his press service said.
“We advocate for adequate and fair consideration of the interests of mountain countries when agreeing on further actions in international political processes related to mountains, including the UNFCCC Convention and the Five Years Action Plan for Mountain Development.
In Kyrgyzstan, we are particularly aware of the fragility of the mountain ecosystems that are our home. The glaciers that supply water to millions of people in Central Asia are rapidly disappearing. This is not just a problem for Kyrgyzstan - it is a regional and global problem. Water scarcity will only worsen, creating the potential for conflict, instability and poverty,” said the president.
He emphasized that this is why Kyrgyzstan has taken the responsibility to promote the Mountain Agenda at the UN and advocates for the recognition of the unique challenges of the world's mountain regions.
“We call on everyone to support the initiative to consolidate the Dialogue on Mountains and Climate Change as an annual event under the Convention.
As we look to the future, let us remember that the fight against climate change is not just a fight for survival, it is also a fight for justice, equity and dignity. Our mountain communities, our farmers, our children - they all deserve a future where they can not only survive but thrive,” concluded President Sadyr Zhaparov.
