Bishkek, July 25 / Kabar /. Most of the Kyrgyz citizens, namely 67.5% are against the legalization of polygamy in Kyrgyzstan, 21.7% support this initiative. This is stated in the report of the Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society, which conducted a sociological survey by phone.
The purpose of the survey was an attempt to learn the citizens' opinion on the idea of legalizing polygamy, which was initiated by religious figures at a roundtable on June 10, 2017.
It turned out that men more support such an initiative than women (33.8% versus 10.8%).
Significant differences in the opinions of the population are also observed depending on the region of residence of the respondents. Thus, the share of those who support the idea of legalizing polygamy is highest in Osh (42.9%), Talas (30.8%) oblasts, and in Batken oblast (31.1%). The idea of legalizing polygamy is least supported among urban residents of Bishkek (14.6%), Osh (15.9%) and Issyk-Kul oblast (16%).
According to the survey, Muslims support the idea of polygamy (22.8%), Christians - 5.6%. The initiative to legalize polygamy was also supported by citizens who do not profess any religion - 11.1%.
In the opinion of every fourth respondent (23.6%), a modern Kyrgyz man can provide more than one wife. Mostly male respondents are sure of that, than women (29.2% versus 18.5%). The majority of interviewed women (72.5%) tend to think that modern men of Kyrgyzstan are unable to provide more than one wife.
The survey shows that only one out of every six (15.9%) of the total number of respondents is informed that the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic provides for the punishment of men for bigamy and polygamy.
In addition, 25.9% agree that the legalization of polygamy can solve the problem of prostitution. Nevertheless, the majority of the population (62.5%) disagrees with such a judgment.
