Export of textile from Uzbekistan to EU countries to grow up to USD 1.2B

Tashkent, Dec. 5, 2020. /Kabar/. Thanks to new preferences of GSP+, textile export from Uzbekistan to EU countries will grow up to USD 1.2 billion, the press service of Uztextilprom (Uzbekistan Textile Industry) association reported.

Note that on Nov. 30, the European Commission made a positive decision on Uzbekistan's application for the status of beneficiary of the Generalized System of Preferences plus GSP+.

After approval of the adopted decision, Uzbek producers and exporters will be able to start using unilateral tariff preferences when exporting their goods to the European market. At the same time, the number of product items that Uzbek producers will be able to export to the EU countries will increase to 6200.

According to experts' estimates, under the GSP+ preferential trade regime, the expected volume of textile products exports at the initial stage will make USD 300 million with its subsequent increase to USD 1.2 billion by 2025.

At present, Uzbekistan exports textile products worth over USD 2.1 billion. Most of it falls on the market of CIS countries, Turkey, China and only USD 60 million on EU countries.

Currently, the Association together with European international organizations is working to improve the quality of products. Special attention is paid to the introduction of European standards, which will subsequently serve to increase exports of textiles to the EU market. For comprehensive promotion of domestic textiles, together with the GIZ German society, Gherzi international consulting company, work is being done to develop a strategy to promote textiles in Europe.
